FAIZABAN (PAN): Heavy snowfall threatened the lives of dozens of shepherds in the Arghanchkhwa district of remote northeastern Badakhshan province, officials said on Sunday.
The herders have been trapped over the past two days along with 3,000 cattle heads in the Andarab-i-Khanch Shewa area of the district, the Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority director said.
Sanaullah Amiri told Pajhwok Afghan News the shepherds and their herds had been unable to come out because of the continuing snowfall. He said Baharak district residents had started removing the snow, but they had sought help from the authorities.
In the meantime, Governor Abdul Rauf Rasekh said provincial officials were making efforts to rescue the snow-trapped individuals. Police chief, rural development and public works departments had been directed to rescue the affected people, he added.
