Thousands complete literacy training in Bamyan

BAMYAN CITY (PAN, completed a three years literacy course in the central province of Bamyan, officials said on Sunday.

The course was jointly funded by The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) and The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Education Director Mohammad Raza Ada told Pajhwok Afghan News: “Our aim is to enable illiterate people to read and write.”

One of the participants, Mehdia, said she would sometimes buy expired items because of illiteracy. But the 35-year-old resident of Bamyan City is now capable of reading product labels to judge their quality and expiry dates.

The literacy programme was useful, another resident, Akbar, said, adding learning programmes should continue.

One literacy programme was launched four days ago in the province and currently 80,000 people are attending courses from first to fifth grade, said a participant, Ada.
