Haqqani commander added to US terror blacklist

KABUL, adding him to one its main terror blacklists, the State Department announced on Tuesday.

Commander Mali Khan was designated as a global terrorist, the department said in a statement on its website. Khan’s assets or property in the United States have been frozen as a result of the curbs.

Barring Americans from engaging in any transactions with him, the action came under Executive Order 13224, which targets terrorists and those providing support for acts of terrorism. “This action will help stem the flow of financial assistance to the Haqqani Network.”

US officials blame the Taliban. “Khan has overseen hundreds of fighters, and has instructed his subordinates to conduct terrorist acts.”

Khan was also accused of involvement in the planning and execution of attacks in Afghanistan against civilians, coalition forces and Afghan police. In June 2011, his deputy provided support for a suicide attack on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, where a dozen people were killed.

He was captured in eastern Afghanistan during a combined Afghan-coalition security operation in late September. His detention marked a significant milestone in the disruption of the Haqqani network.
