JALALABAD (PAN (ARCS) volunteers started cleaning parks and roads of Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Wednesday.

City parks and roads were in bad condition due to inattention from the government, ARCS Director Nangyalay Yousafzai told Pajhwok Afghan News. “The Eidgah, where Eid prayers are prayed, is full of garbage and same is the case of parks.”

They wanted to spruce up the areas in addition to drawing people’s attention to the city’s cleanliness, Yousafzai said, hoping residents would extend a helping hand to their workers.

Ajmal, a volunteer, called his work a civic duty and said: “If someone visits our city and sees parks and roads in untidy condition, they will certainly think of its residents as careless people.”

Dozens of workers of the municipality were busy cleaning canals these days, Deputy Mayor Eng. Hakimuddin said. Seeking help from locals, he said it was impossible for the municipality to keep the environment clean without their assistance.
