GHAZNI: Police and National Directorate of Security (NDS) personnel have seized hundreds of unregistered motorcycles in an effort to curb the use of illegal vehicles in the capital of southern Ghazni province, officials said on Wednesday.
None of the impounded motorbikes was registered or had a number plate and that was why the security situation in Ghazni City was on the nosedive, provincial traffic chief, Staff Capt. Muhammadullah Ahmadi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
No one would be allowed to ride motorcycles without registration, Ahmadi said, adding they had seized 441 unregistered bikes, whose owners were expected to arrange registration documents.
In order to check the city’s slide into lawlessness that created problems for residents and security forces, they would continue the campaign against unregistered motorcycles, said the police chief, Brig. Gen. Zarawar Zahid.
But bike owners complained the traffic department should have warned them before the action by providing the registration facility.
“I was sitting in my shop when two NDS agents came and they put my bike in their vehicle without telling me anything,” shopkeeper Rafiullah said.
He would be unable to continue his business as he had to come daily to Ghazni City from the Arzo village, 10 kilometers from the provincial capital, the shopkeeper added.
Another shopkeeper Ghulam Farooq said the traffic department must have facilitated the vehicle registration process before embarking on the campaign.
