JALALBAD (PAN): The Ali Sherkhel tribe surrendered heavy weapons and explosives to the government in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Wednesday.

Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the weapons were turned in after the tribespeople agreed on a ceasefire with Sepais.

He said Governor Gul Agha Sherzai was making efforts to resolve the land dispute between the two tribes with the help of tribal elders.

Abdulzai added the weapons included two heavy machine guns, two rocket-propelled grenades (RPG) and mortar and anti-aircraft shells.

Malik Sayed Hakim, one of the tribal elders, said they were opposed to war and that was why they surrendered their arms.
