KABUL): Pakistani revealed its real face to the international fraternity by refusing to lend its weight to the Afghan peace effort at the Istanbul Conference, an analyst said on Thursday.

Attended by representatives from 20 countries and aid agencies, the conference on regional cooperation and the future of Afghanistan was held on Wednesday.

Zubair Shafiqi, a political analyst and participant of the event, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Karzai government was eyeing Pakistan’s written commitment to supporting the peace drive in Afghanistan, but it did not happen.

Instead the Pakistani delegation held out empty verbal promises that they would help bring stability to the country, he said. “One achievement for Kabul was that Pakistan showed the world, which counted so much on the nuclear-capable nation, its real face.”

He said Islamabad had agreed to cooperate with Afghanistan in investigating the assassination of ex- president and chief peace negotiator, Burhanuddin Rabbani, after several attempts and requests from Kabul.

Rabbani was killed in a suicide attack at his residence in the high-security Wazir Akbar Khan diplomatic district of Kabul on Sept. 20. Afghan officials claim a representative of the Taliban killed Rabbani, and that the murder was plotted in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province.

Documents obtained from accomplices of the bomber included videos, photos and audiotapes, which were handed to the Pakistan embassy in Kabul.

Political analyst Eng. Mohammad Younus Fakoor echoed Shafiqis’ remarks by saying Pakistan and Iran were trying to drum up support for themselves at the conference in Turkey. Afghanistan should have reached an agreement with the two neighbours before the gathering, he believed.

The only benefit was that the world listened to President Hamid Karzai’s speech, he added. The global fraternity has long realised the fact that neighbours could play an important role in bringing peace to Afghanistan.
