KABUL (PAN): The prices of firewood, food and other daily-use items went up during the outgoing week in Kabul, retailers said on Thursday.

The price of a 50-kg Brazilian flour rose from 2,200 afghanis to 2,250 afs and the same quantity of rice increased from 2,500 afs to 2,540 afs.

Haji Fazlul Rahman, the head of Food Traders Union, told Pajhwok Afghan News the price of a five litres tin of Spin Ghar ghee increased from 420 afs to 440 afs.

A 50-kg sack of Pakistani flour sold for 1,070 afs against its last week’s price of 1,040 afs. A kilo of black tea cost 190 afs and the same amount of green tea 160 afs — the same prices as last week.

Wholesale rates of food items varied from retail prices in some parts of the city. A shopkeeper in the Dohi Bagh locality said he sold a 50-kg sack of Pakistani flour for 1,100 afs.

Syed Alam added the same amount of Pakistani rice cost 3,000 afs and a 50-kg bag of Brazilian sugar 2,450afs. A five-kg cane tin of ghee was priced at 470 afs, a kg of African back tea at 200 afs and the same amount of Indonesian green tea at 180 afs.

Fuel prices also edged up, said a pump station worker in the Baraki neighbourhood, Mohammad Afzal. One litre of diesel sold for 59 afs and the same amount of petrol for 58afs, compared to last week’s price of 56afs.

The price of 560 kilograms of unpeeled oak went up to 6,800afs from last week’s 6,600afs, said a firewood stall owner in the Charahi Shaheed locality, Qaseem Khan.

A 200afs increase was also seen in the rate of 560 kg of peeled oak, whose last week’s rate stood at 6,800 afs. On Thursday, the rate was recorded at 7,700afs, he said.

Moneychanger Ahmad Shah Salehi said the buying rate of one US dollar was 48.15afs, while 1,000 Pakistani rupees accounted for 559afs. Last week’s exchange value of the greenback stood at 47.90afs and 1,000 Pakistani rupees at 555afs.
