Haqqani group leader detained in Paktia
KABUL (PAN): A Haqqani network leader has been arrested by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldiers during an operation in the Syed Karam district of southeastern Paktia province, the force said in a statement.
The ISAF media office in Kabul in a statement said the rebel commander was detained by a joint ISAF-Afghan force. It accused the detainee of involvement in gun and bomb attacks in Gerdez city, the provincial capital and planting roadside bombs.
The statement said the Haqqani group leader was being interrogated.
The district chief, Niaz Mohammad Khalil, said the operation was carried out in the Usmankhel area. A suspect had been arrested during the offensive, but his identity was yet to be determined, Khalil said.
A resident of the area, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the detainee was a prayer leader in a local mosque.
