CHAGHCHARAN (PAN province claim provincial council members, instead of serving the people, are busy promoting their personal interests.

“The council members are supposed to monitor activities of government departments, but they have done nothing in this regard,” alleged Ghulam Rabbani Hadafmand, the editor-in-chief of a monthly magazine, Feroz Koh.

He said the council members remained absent most of the time and busy doing their own businesses. As a result of their apathy, people have lost trust in them, he added.

“The public representatives have been unable to resolve public disputes and problems,” remarked Nasima, a civil society activist.

She said residents had great expectations the council would play a proactive role in carrying out development projects, including roads, electricity, drinking water, public health centres and improving the security situation.

“Instead of helping the people, the council members are engaged in their own businesses and bicker with one another on petty issues,” said Ramazan Adil, another resident.

“We are facing our own problems, and are thus not in a position to work for people’s welfare,” the council chief, Fazal Haq Ehsan, said, while confirming people’s complaints.

He accused most of the members of working for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and staying absent from their office. Another problem was lack of cooperation between the council and the government, Ehsan said.

However, he said they had conveyed the concern of residents regarding construction of roads and other issues to the authorities concerned, but no remedial step had so far been taken.

The governor’s spokesman, Abdul Hai Khatibi, said government officials were supposed to cooperate with the council members and provincial departments were already doing so.
