KABUL late Tuesday, an official said.

The engagement erupted after dozens of militants, armed with small and heavy weapons, stormed a joint military base in Barmal district, governor’s spokesman Mukhlis Afghan told Pajhwok Afghan News on Wednesday.

Mukhlis said between 60 to 70 insurgents were killed in the gun battle. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed to Pajhwok that there had been an attack on a base in the district.

In a statement, the multinational force said a large group of insurgents attacked the coalition base using small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.

The troops used ground-based munitions and close air support assets to engage the insurgent position, inflicting “significant” casualties on them, while there have been no reports of casualties to the coalition troops and local civilians, the statement added.

Two buildings used by insurgents were destroyed in the fighting and ISAF officials were gathering information to assess the offensive, it concluded.
