WASHINGTON (PAN): The seventh annual US-Afghan Business Matchmaking Conference — flagship event of business leaders from the two nations — started in Washington on Sunday night with a reception held at a luxurious hotel a block away from the White House.

To be attended by some 250 business leaders from the United States and Afghanistan, the participant of the meeting organized by Afghan-American Chamber of Commerce over the next two days would discuss on a wide range of issues.

The focus areas for this year included mining and natural resources, agribusiness, information and communications technologies (ICT), construction and infrastructure, energy and power, transportation and logistics and security, said Suleman Lutfi, chairman of the Afghan-American Chamber of Commerce.

Afghan Agriculture Minister Mohammad Asif Rahimi appreciated the role played by the business community from the US and Afghanistan in the country’s development.

“As the country moves towards a market economy, there are abundant opportunities for the private sector, “Rahimi said in his address to the business leaders from the two nations.

On Monday, the Chamber would announce “AACC Business of the Year Award” at a gala reception. “For businesses in Afghanistan, the AACC conference is ‘the’ main event of its kind in the world and you simply cannot afford to miss it,” Lutfi said.
