WASHINGTON (PAN (SIGAR), which has been vacant since January this year.
In a letter to Obama, US Senator Claire McCaskil asserted the appointment of SIGAR should be a top priority for his administration. The post has been laying vacant since January this year after the resignation of Maj.Gen. Arnold Fields.
“I am deeply frustrated by the Administration’s delay in filling this critical position,” wrote McCaskill, Chairman of the Senate Sub-committee on Contracting Oversight.
“As President, you have urged the nation and the Congress to address some of our nation’s most pressing problems, saying ‘we can’t wait.’
I ask that you find the same urgency in appointing a qualified, experienced individual as SIGAR,” he said. The SIGAR was created by Congress in 2008 with the purpose of detecting and preventing waste, fraud, and abuse in Afghanistan.
Earlier this year, the Commission on Wartime Contracting concluded that the US has wasted as much as $60 billion through contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
