KABUL) commander Gen. Stanley McChrystal arrived in Kabul on Saturday in response to an invitation from President Hamid Karzai.
A statement from the president’s office said McChrystal called on Karzai in evening. It is the former ISAF commander’s first visit to Kabul since he relinquished the post on June 23, 2010.
Karzai hailed the services of the top American general for his country and appreciated his efforts at curbing civilian causalities in Afghanistan.
McChrystal thanked Afghan people for supporting him during his tenure and said he enjoyed his stay in the country. Along with his wife, he will stay in the city for a few days as state guest.
The former general was sacked after a controversial interview, in which he criticized high-ranking US officials.
