JALALABAD (PAN): A media-monitoring commission was established on Monday at the end of a gathering in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, officials said.

Representatives from different local and international media outlets and Department of Information officials participated in the meeting.

Director of Information Awrang Samim told Pajhwok Afghan News the commission had been set up to provide accurate and credible information to the people.

Another reason was to promote the urban culture, role of media in removing corruption and superstitious traditions besides curbing sub-standards music, cable networks and live programmes that harmed Islamic values, he said.

Headed by Pajhwok reporter Abdul Mueed Hashimi, the body will have representatives from the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), NAI Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan, Mediothek, the Department of Information, the governor’s office and journalists’ association.

In addition to defending the rights of journalists, he would try to help media outlets overcome their weaknesses, Hashimi said. There are 19 audio and 21 print media outlets operating in the province.
