KABUL on Tuesday to investigate the assassination of former president Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani, an official said on Monday.
At a recent summit in Istanbul, Pakistan had promised to cooperate with investigations into the chief peace negotiator’s killing, a spokesman for President Hamid Karzai told reporters at first maiden press briefing.
Rabbani, the former president and Jamiat-i-Islami leader, was assassinated in a suicide attack on his residence in the high-security Wazir Akbar Khan diplomatic district of Kabul on Sept. 20.
On October 1, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) claimed recovering documents that showed Rabbani’s assassination was planned in the Satellite Town neighbourhood of Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province.
Karzai’s spokesman, Aimal Faizi, recalled Afghan officials had urged Pakistan in Istanbul to support investigations into the murder. The Pakistani embassy in Kabul has now asked Afghan authorities to send the delegation to that country.
The Cabinet, at its weekly meeting on Monday, decided to send high-ranking officials from NDS, Ministries of Interior, Defence and Foreign Affairs to the neighbouring country to investigate the assassination, Faizi concluded.
