Attack on Herat PRT: 3 sentenced to death

Nov 22, 2011 - 16:33

HERAT CITY (PANinfo-icon): Three people were sentenced to death on charges of attacking the Italian Provincial Reconstructioninfo-icon Team (PRTinfo-icon) and killing civilians in western Herat province, officials said on Tuesday.

They were convicted as a result of an open trail by a primary court in the Herat City, the provincial capital, Judge Abdul Razaq Nijrabi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

On May 30, seven civilians were killed and more than 50 others, including 10 Italian soldiers and two Afghan guards, wounded when a group of suicide bombers attacked the PRT compound in the city.

Two of them from Kandahar and one from Herat, the men were sentenced under Articles 5 and 15 of the relevant law, according to the judge, who said the convicts could appeal the verdict in the appellant court before moving the Supreme Court.

"My 20 years sold brother was killed in the attack in Cinema Chowk," said the petitioner, Mohammad Shafiq.

Three militants including their leader, Abdullah alias Lala, were detained on Aug. 25, 2011 in connection with the suicide attack. Lala and his associates confessed to transferring a suicide bomber from Pakistaninfo-icon to the city.
