KABUL (PAN): The Afghan karate squad finished third, earning seven several medals in the first-ever South Asian Karate Championship held in the Indian capital, New Delhi, from Nov. 21-23.

South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries -- Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, the Maldives, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka -- participated in the championship that concluded on Wednesday evening.

Olympic Committee spokesman, Mujibullah Rahmani, said the eight-member Afghan squad earned three gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Mina Asadi, the only female Afghan athlete taking part in the event, bagged a bronze medal.

Pakistan beat India to win the championship.
