KABUL civilian aid beyond 2014 when all foreign troops are scheduled to pull out.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Afghan counterpart Zalmay Rassoul in Kabul, Sovndal said Denmark would continue to assist Afghanistan in areas of economy, education and training Afghan police.

He noted a remarkable improvement in Afghanistan’s education sector over the past four years, saying Afghan security forces had also made remarkable headway during the period.

Sovndal, who arrived in Afghanistan on Friday, also met troops from his country in southern Helmand province.

Having 750 soldiers in Helmand, Denmark has so far lost 42 troops in Afghanistan. It has provided Afghanistan $670 million in aid for reconstruction projects and strengthening security since 2002.

Rassoul thanked Copenhagen for continued assistance to Kabul, saying Denmark had supported Afghans during the jihad against the Soviets.

Later in the day, the visiting minister met President Hamid Karzai and promised Danish cooperation beyond 2014. He was accompanied by Danish minister for development, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.

He said Denmark would participate in the second Bonn conference, slated for Dec. 5 in Germany. In coordination with the UK, he added, Denmark would train Afghan security troops after 2014.

The minister said his country remained committed to helping Afghan women and linked development of Afghanistan with improvement in women’s situation.

Karzai acknowledged Denmark has been major donor to Afghanistan since the establishment of the transitional authority.
