KABUL, Nov 28, 2011: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran on Monday promised to enhance regional cooperation in countering drug smuggling and narcotics production.
Counternarcotics ministers from the three countries agreed at a meeting in Kabul to step up efforts at preventing drug smuggling from Afghanistan, which produces about 90 percent of the world's opium.
Iran's Interior Minister Mustafa Mohammad Najjar, Pakistan's Federal Minister for Counternarcotics Haji Khudabakhsh, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) Executive Director Yuri Fedotov and Afghan Counternarcotics Minister Zarar Ahmad Muqbil attended the fifth trilateral meeting.
Funded by the United Nations, so far a dozen joint operations had been conducted as part of the tripartite initiative, Muqbil told the meeting. The operations had yielded good results, he said.
