FAIZABAD (PAN): Disease and lack of feed has badly affected livestock, a key source of livelihood for residents of northern Badakhshan province, where several roads remain blocked due to snowfall, officials said on Tuesday.
The residents of eight remote districts have lost animal feed due to the ongoing snowfall that led to the closure of several highways, Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Director Mohammad Alam Alami told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Up to 700 tonnes of animal feed allocated for Wakhan, Zebak, Shaghnan, Karan wa Mangan, Yamgan, Arghanjkhwa and Nasi wa Kofab districts could not be delivered due to road blockades, he said.
However, yje official added efforts were being made to transfer feed to border areas on horsebacks through Tajikistan.
Veterinary section head at the agriculture department, Mohammad Shafi, said many of the 185,000 livestock in the eight districts had been infected with different diseases. However, he had no exact figures.
Fourteen tucks carrying wheat and rice for draught-affected people remained stranded in Yawan district due to road blockade, Alami said.
