KABUL): As many as 83 candidates of parliamentary elections referred to Mullas (prayer leaders) for winning their seats in the parliament and with paying them they asked for making amulets for their success.
A Mullah living in Taimani area of central capital city Kabul, on condition of anonymity told Pajhwok Afghan News there were almost 83 candidates mostly from Kabul province, who were visiting him at night.
14 of them were women while the remaining were men while some of them had visited him three times for the same purpose, he said.
Without naming any of those candidates, he said they wanted him to use knowledge of mathematics and spirituality to foresee election result and find out any way to success.
According to another Mullah, living in 4th police district of central capital city, several candidates from different provinces had visited him during election campaign and most of them got amulets for success in the elections in exchange of money.
He wrote amulet for a female candidate and she gave him id=”mce_marker”3000 for that, he claimed.
Some of the candidates have printed pictures of religious and spiritual figures in their posters as a sign of success.
Zalmay Topan, a member of Itihad-i-Islami party is among those candidates having pitures of spiritual leaders. He has printed picture of spiritual figure Mullah Mirch Agha from Kandahar province, shown as praying in traditional dress.
“Mirch Agha is a spiritual personality while I am a devotee of him and his prayers are with me,” Topan said and added he had spent his own money and built a house and guest house for Mirch Agha.
Faheem Kohdamani, parliament candidate and former producer a private TV while criticizing spiritual and religious groups said they were unable to differentiate between Mullah and magician.
According to Kohdamani, so many people in the city approached Mullahs for relief of pains, finding missing family members, getting marriage and some candidates for their success in the parliamentary elections.
Robina Jalali, a candidate from Kabul province said she believed in Shrines and she used to visit the Shrine every Wednesday, and pray for her success.
“Mullahs can not help anyone for winning a parliamentary seat and if they are able to do it, why don not they do it for themselves,” she said.
Commenting on the issue, another candidate Shukria Barikzai said, “I am reciting Holy Quran and offer Istikhara prayer during my election campaign for my satisfaction but not to gain seat in parliament.”
According to Dr. Syed Abubakar Mutaqi, a religious scholar, both augury and writing Amulets were acts of devil while writer and receiver were both guilty.
Mutaqi quoting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “I fear those who are writing amulets and those who get it, will go to hell.”
Blaming Afghan government he said, if Islamic Sharia was properly implemented in a country, one would never see those Mullahs who were writing amulets.
