KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan crushed Bhutan 8-1 in their South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Cup match in New Delhi to reach the semifinals, an official said on Wednesday.

South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries -- Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives and Bhutan -- are participating in the championship that got underway on December 3.

Afghanistan scored eight goals, while the Bhutanese were able to find the net once, Afghan coach Humayun Kargar told Pajhwok over the telephone from New Delhi.

Bilal Arezo, Islamudin, Jaluluddin Shariatyar, Atta Mohammad, Yamir Ali and Yusuf Mashriqi scored the goals for the winners at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Afghanistan with seven points marched into the semifinals, scheduled to take place on Thursday, he said. The national team had previously outclassed Sari Lanka 3-1, but was held by India to a 1-1 draw.
