KABUL): President Hamid Karzai, cancelling a planned visit to the United Kingdom, returned home after Tuesday’s deadly attacks in the capital Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, an official said on Wednesday.

From Germany, where he chaired the Bonn Conference on Afghanistan‘s future, Karzai was due to travel to London for talks with British Prime Minister David Cameron, the Presidential Palace in Kabul said.

“President Karzai will visit those injured in the twin bombings and share his sympathies with the bereaved families, a statement from his office said.

The bombing took place near the Abul Fazal Shrine in the second police district, where members of the Shiite sect were marking the martyrdom anniversary of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS).

According to the interior ministry, up to 55 people were killed and more 134 others, including women and children, wounded in the suicide attack on Shiite mourners.
