Deterrent punishment for acid attackers sought

KABUL): Three suspects detained in connection with an acid attack on a family in northern Kunduz province have been transferred to Kabul, a Ministry of Interior official said on Friday.

Five members of a family were attacked with acid by gunmen in the 4th police district of Kunduz City, the provincial capital, on Nov. 30, 2011. Police on Sunday claimed arresting one suspect.

Another three suspects — Abdul Karim, Abdul Rahim and Fazal — were detained on Thursday in Kunduz City and transferred to Kabul, the interior ministry spokesman told reporters.

Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui said the assailants, who had defamed Afghanistan, would be referred to judicial organs. He sought tough punishments for the detainees to prevent such incidents in the future.

Armed men stormed into his house in the Shorabak area of Kunduz City and tied him up after beating him, complained Sultan Mohammad, whose spouse and daughters were sprayed with acid.

While demanding deterrent punishment for the attackers, he said the attack was the result of differences over the engagement of his daughter, Mumtaz with a militiaman.

Mumtaz has been sent to India for treatment by the Department of Women‘s Affairs, said Mohammad, who sought financial support from the government.

The detainees, shown to journalists in Kabul, were not allowed to speak with reporters.
