Afghanistan set up SAFF Cup final with IndiaBy Syed Hadi Kazimi Dec 10, 2011 - 15:21
KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan edged past Nepal 1-0 in their South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Cup match in New Delhi to reach the final, an official said on Wednesday.
South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries -- Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives and Bhutan -- are participating in the championship that got underway on December 3.
Afghani players played well, but they lost some chances, pushing the match into the extra time, Afghan coach Humayun Kargar told Pajhwok over the telephone from New Delhi.
Thanks to Bilal Arzo, who scored the solitary goal in the 101st minute, Afghanistan marched into the final of the tournament -- for the first time. The coach promised all-out efforts to win the championship.
Afghanistan will take on hosts India in the final, slated for Sunday. In their previous encounter, the Afghans held India to a 1-1 draw.
