KABUL): A three-day exhibition showcasing home-made products under the name of “Nab-i-Mahali” was inaugurated in Kabul on Sunday, with the aim to find proper market for the products.

Sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the exhibition is organised by Afghan traders in a hotel named Dunya Hotel.

Up to 120 items, including carpets, overcoats and glass-made material including vases, glasses, dishes and pottery items are displayed at various stalls.

Dairy products like milk and yoghurt, besides honey, jewelleries including rings, ear rings, lockets and equipment for children play are attracting the attention of visitors at the show.

About 25 objects of handicrafts, including hand-woven clothing, have also been put on display at the exhibition.

A handicraft stall owner, Laila Ahmadi, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “We can sell these items with a good price if there is market for our goods”.

Ahmadi said she sold a pair of male cloths for 6,000 afghanis ($122.976) at the exhibition, saying she would have received 4000 afghanis ($81.9840) from shopkeepers for the same.

Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries chief, Qurban Haqjo, on the occasion said improvement in the quality of local products could help develop the country’s economy.

He said people in remote areas would not need to seek jobs in cities if they were provided work facilities there.

He asked the finance ministry to increase taxes on imported goods to help Afghan products and handicrafts easily compete with the imported goods.

Also speaking on the occasion, deputy customs chief at the finance ministry, Syed Mobin Shah, promised efforts to find market for home-made products.
