KABUL): Four militants were detained and an ammunition cache recovered during separate operations in southern Kandahar, Helmand and Zabul provinces, the Ministry of Defence said on Monday.

The ammunition cache was recovered during a joint operation by Afghan and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in the Zangabad area of Panjwai district in Kandahar on Sunday evening, the ministry said in a statement.

The cache consisted of dozens of illuminating cartridges, seven jerry canes, each carrying 20 litres of acid, two warheads of mortar shell, 44 anti-personal mines, four anti-tank mines, three bags of explosives and other materials, the statement said.

In neighbouring Zabul province, the statement added, three suspected militants were detained with arms and ammunition during an operation in Shah Joy district.

Elsewhere, police caught red handed a militant planting a roadside bomb in Grishk district of southern Helmand province, the governor’s office said.

The detainee had been involved in roadside blasts that had taken the lives of many innocent people, the governor’s office said in a statement.

Meanwhile, two children were injured in a blast in the new bazaar area of the district, the statement added.
