Dec 20, 2011 - 15:27

QALAT (PANinfo-icon): Dozens of weapons seized by security forces during operations in southern Zabul province were on Monday handed over to the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) programme, an official said.

The 56 weapons delivered to DIAG programme included four machineguns, five pistols and 47 Kalashnikovs, which had been recovered by police during last four months of operations, deputy governor Muhammad Jan Rasulyar told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He also said a number of people had also been arrested on the charge of having links with militants, he said, without giving any specific figure for the detainees.

Police also recovered thousands of kilograms of explosives and drugs during the period, Rasulyar said.

Meanwhile, police during a search operation in a marketplace in Mehtarlam city of neibhouring Laghman province seized arms on Monday.

The arms included 20 short guns, 38 pistols and 19 shells. Five persons were arrested in connection with the arms, police chief Brig. Gen. Abdur Rehman Sarjang said.
