FARAH CITY (PAN): Fifteen ancient coins found in a pot were handed over to the Information and Culture Department in western Farah province, officials said on Thursday.

The coins were found on Wednesday evening when youths were levelling a football ground near a historic house in the Darabad village on the outskirts of Farah city, a National Directorate of Security (NDS) official said on condition of anonymity.

The youth surrendered the pot containing 15 coins to NDS officials, who later handed them over to officials at the information and culture department, he said.

The ancient house belongs to the period long before Christ, the information department director, Farid Ahmad Ayubi, said.

He said they had announced on televisions that if someone had taken away any of the coins from the pot, they should return them to the department, after witnesses claimed there were many coins in the pot.

“The youth were using a tractor to collapse a wall in the ancient house. When the wall collapsed, they found a pot. The boys then collected the coins and fled,” a resident of the village, Saber, said. He had no exact figures for the coins, but guessed the number as one hundred.
