KABUL): The death toll from the consumption of poisonous alcohol at an engagement ceremony in Kabul has reached seven, after two more died in hospitals, officials and witnesses said on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday night in a house in the Qabil Bai area of the 9th police district in Kabul. About 26 youth were found poisoned in a room and shifted to hospitals, participants of the ceremony said.

Six of the victims were taken to Pakistan deteriorated, taking the number of dead to seven.

One of the victims died in a hospital in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and another at the Istiqlal Hospital in Kabul on Sunday.

Kabul crime branch police chief, Brig. Gen. Muhammad Zahir, also confirmed the death toll had increased to seven. He said police had found two empty liquor bottles at the scene. Blood samples of the victims had been taken for a forensic test, he added

Ibn-i-Sina Hospital Director Dr. Gula Jan Rahmat on Saturday said they had received a dozen affected people. He said the victims were aged between 18 and 27 years.

The doctor quoted the victims as saying they had taken a cherry beverage, but later on they realised to have consumed a lot of alcohol. He said the sick were discharged after their stomachs were washed.
