Football tournament concludes in Wardak
MAIDAN SHAHR (PAN): A football tournament, jointly sponsored by the USAID's RAMP UP programme and the National Olympic Committee, concluded in central Maidan Wardak province on Sunday.
The Peace Football Tournament was won by the Khurshid Club, a team from Maidan Shahr, the provincial capital, the governor's office said in a statement.
Khurshid Club defeated the Lamar team in the final to lift the cup at stake. The event featured a dozen outfits from various parts of the province, a statement from the Governor's House said.
It quoted Governor Mohammad Halim Fidayee as saying that such events were beneficial in keeping the youth away from unwanted activities, including drug addiction. He said the event was aimed at sending the message of peace to rebels.
National Olympic Committee deputy head, Ainullah Haqbeen, said the RAMP UP-East programme planned to conduct several tournaments of taekwondo, football and cricket in the province.
The winners and runners-up were given away awards by the governor and the provincial council head.
