GHAZNI: Two Taliban fighters were killed and as many wounded during a clash with Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers in southern Ghazni province, officials said on Monday.

The fire exchange happened in the Abu Qala area of Andar district late on Sunday when an ANA patrol saw a man planting a roadside bomb, Gen. Daud Shah Wafadar, the 203rd Thunder Military Corps commander, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A rocket launcher along with three shells, one AK-47 assault rifle and explosives were seized by the troops, he said, adding the gunbattle lasted about 30 minutes. The soldiers suffered no casualties.

Brig. Gen. Zarawar Zahid, the provincial police chief, confirmed the clash, saying four Taliban fighters had suffered casualties.

HERAT: Seventy-four kilograms of heroin was seized by police on the border with Iran in western Herat province, an official said on Monday.

The heroin was placed in a truck, counter narcotics officer at the police headquarters, Col. Ahmad Zeya Hafizi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said a suspect detained in connection with the drug was being investigated.

Up to four tonnes of drugs and 760 litres of acids have been seized and 190 traffickers detained by Herat police since the start of the current year, said Hafizi.

KABUL: Five insurgents were killed and 28 others detained during joint operations in different provinces over the past 24 hours, defence and interior ministries said on Monday.

The operations were conducted by Afghan and NATO-led troops in Kabul, Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, Baghlan, Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni and Khost provinces, separate statements from the ministries said.

According to the Ministry of Interior, 24 rebels were arrested and two AK-47 assault rifles, three other weapons, as many anti-vehicle mines, 10 kilograms of explosives and two kg of heroin were seized during the operations.

Additionally, 43 BM1 shells, three rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) shells, five anti-vehicle mines and explosives were recovered and defused by the security personnel in Bamyan, Nimroz, Daikundi, Urizgan and Logar provinces. 

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said two militants were killed after they opened fire on a patrol of Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers in southern Ghazni province. Another two fighters were injured.

One rocket launcher and one AK-47 rifle were seized and a roadside bomb defused, the MoD said, adding three four guerrillas were held in Khost and Baghlan provinces.

NANGARHAR: Four civilians were wounded when a foreign military vehicle rammed into a car in the eastern province of Nangarhar on Monday, an official said.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) vehicle collided with the car on the Jalalabad-Torkham highway in Momand Dara district.

District chief, Noor Agha Kamran, said the ISAF tank flipped over as a result of the collision, wounding four civilians in another car, coming from Torkham to Jalalabad.

Three of the wounded civilians were reported to be in critical condition, according to Kamran.

NANGARHAR: Four suspected insurgents were killed while planting roadside bombs in an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) airstrike in eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Monday.

The individuals were accused of attacking Afghan and international servicemembers in Ghanikhel district of the province, Haji Zalmay, the district administrative chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the air raid took place on the Torkham-Jalalabad highway late on Sunday night when the militants were planting landmines. Civilians were not harmed in the attack, he added.

The victims’ bodies were taken to a Ghanikhel hospital. One of the dead is a resident of the area, while the three others are yet to be identified. Rahman Gul, a doctor on duty in the district hospital, confirmed receiving four bodies.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed killing seven security personnel in separate incidents in Khogyani district near the Pakistan border.

ZABUL: Three suspected rebels were detained by National Directorate of Security (NDS) operatives with more than three tonnes of explosives on Monday, an official said.

The explosives packed in eight sacks were recovered from a vehicle during an NDS operation in the Bakarzai area Qalat, the capital of southern Zabul province.

Deputy Governor Muhammad Jan Rasulyar told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants wanted to use the material in terrorist attacks in the city. He gave no further details.

Separately, six people were injured in a clash in the Babagak area of the city late on Sunday night. The dispute between villagers turned violent, resulting in injuries.

An official at the Qalat Civil Hospital said on condition of anonymity six injured were brought to hospital last night. Two of the seriously injured were referred to Kandahar for treatment, he added.
