People have difference of opinion on Kunar provincial council

ASADABAD (PAN): Director of provincial council in eastern Kunar province has said officials of the provincial government administration were working better, but the governor house was not cooperating with them.

The province has total nine seats, including three allocated for women in the provincial council.

They were working day and night to solve problems of people, Haji Mian Hassan Adil, director of the council told Pajhwok Afghan News.

“We have summoned authorities of local municipality, rural development, public health and some other departments to talk with them on problems of the people,” he said, adding they discussed problems of corruption in those departments and were advised to treat people well during their dealing, which had now brought positive changes in those departments.

If any person complained about any directors of local departments, so they would be dealt with according to the law and procedures of the council, he added.

“In most cases, we are in complete coordination with the provincial administration, but in construction works they do not coordinate with us accordingly,” Adil said.

The governor house was not coordinating them in some of those projects which were in progress but if it did so, the council would help them a lot, he said.

“As public representatives, we must monitor those projects and we have formed few commissions, such as rehabilitation, education, supporting the poor, health and few other commissions, to coordinate and monitor relevant activities of concerned departments,” Adil added.

However, Syed Fazalullah Waheedi, the governor rejected the allegation of non-cooperation made by the director of provincial council and said they had coordination with the council in all projects.

“The council has representation in provincial development committee and all necessary information is given to that committee,” the governor said. 

The council was elected 21 months ago and meanwhile some of people are happy while others not satisfied with its performance.

“I do not know what main duties of the council are, as I never visited their office so far,” Sardar Khan, a tribal elder and former Jihadi leader from the province said, adding the council had pledged during their elections campaign, but they forgot everything by now.

A resident of Kirali area of the province on condition of anonymity said they did not expect anything good of the council as most of the council’s members, including their director were illiterate, so they would not be able to serve people.

The members had gotten their seats with money and by fraud while they did not qualify as members, Farmanullah, resident of provincial capital Asad Abad city said.

The director of the provincial council while responding to those complaints said all Afghans had freedom of speech and expression and they could say anything.

“It is correct some of the members would be illiterate, but we are not teachers to arrange workshops for people. They voted us and now they are blaming us,” he said.
