Multiple use of single towel goes uncheckedBy Tamkin Dec 29, 2011 - 15:43
SHIBERGHAN (PAN): Despite a government ban, the use of a single towel by several people remains common at public baths in northern Jawzjan province, residents said on Thursday.
"One towel is being used by several people at bathrooms, with each customer paying five afghanis," Mohammad Rafi, a worker at a public bath in Shiberghan confirmed.
He said, "I daily wash towels in home and provide them in clean condition to customers". He said his daily income was 500 afghanis ($10.1420) and paid 300 afghanis ($6.08519) to the bathroom owner.
The use of the same towel by dozens people continued unchecked, showing apathy on the part of health officials, residents say.
Driver, Abdul Majid, who claims using the towels almost daily, said he had no problem so far.
Another resident, Mohammad Reza, believed using the same towel by several people could cause skin diseases.
Public health director Rahmatulllah Haidari said the post of the environmental hygiene officer remained vacant and promised efforts at filling the post at the earliest.
