New blocks added to Nangarhar prisonBy Abdul Mueed Hashmi Dec 31, 2011 - 16:30
JALALABAD (PAN): Two newly-constructed blocks of the central jail in the eastern province of Nangarhar were inaugurated on Saturday, an official said.
Each portion, having eight rooms and as many bathrooms, could house 150 inmates, Prison Director Col. Abdul Wali Hesarak said at the inaugural ceremony.
The blocks had been built at a cost of $168,000 (8.2 million afghanis), provided by the US Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), he said.
Equipped with modern facilities, the blocks would help resolve the problem of space for political prisoners, Col. Hesarak hoped. About 1,400 prisoners, including 21 women, are currently being held in the jail.
Also on Saturday, a clinic was inaugurated in the Kama district of the province. The clinic in Sangar Serai area was constructed with financial support from the PRT, Public Health Director Dr. Baz Mohammad Sherzad said.
