KABUL): As many as 61 militants, 17 civilians and 19 policemen were killed over the past one week in different incidents of violence across the country, an official said on Monday.
Another eight militants, 160 civilians and 40 policemen were injured during the period, the spokesman for the Ministry of Interior (MoI), Ghulam Sadiq Siddiqui told reporters in Kabul.
The causalities among militants took place during joint operations by foreign and Afghan forces, he said, adding 166 militants were arrested.
He said 49 out of all 90 attacks planned by militants had been prevented during the week.
About a 15-year-old married girl, Sar Gul, who was severely tortured by his in-laws and kept her locked up in a toilet for six months, Siddiqui said the case was under investigation and her mother-in-law and sister-in-law had been arrested.
The shocking news surfaced last week when police rescued the bride kept locked-up in a toilet in northern Baghlan province.
Currently under treatment at Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital, Gul will be sent to India for medical treatment, officials said.
President Hamid Karzai has said that whoever used violence against Gul will be punished.
According to officials in Baghlan, Gul’s in-laws kept her in a basement for six months, ripped her fingernails out, tortured her with hot irons and broke her fingers after she refused having sex with men brought home by her in-laws.
