KABUL, Jan 01, 2012: (PAN) The NATO-led forces had made incredible seizures of drugs in Afghanistan last year, dealing a blow to the finances of the Taliban-led insurgents, a spokesman for the multinational force said on Monday.

Brigadier General Carsten Jacobson, spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force, told a joint news conference with the Interior Ministry spokesman, Zahir Azimi, narcotics trafficking had been a key generator of funding for the insurgency, but the source of revenue was diminishing.

He said the Afghan security forces, together with ISAF partners, seized an incredible amount of illicit drugs and related material in 2011 versus 2010.

Opium seizures rose 13 percent and those of hashish climbed 59 percent, while the amount of marijuana and morphine confiscated soared 1,208 percent and 10,113 percent respectively, according to the figures from ISAF, which did not give the amounts of drugs seized.

He said they would continue to choke off revenue generated by the sale of illicit drugs in 2012.

Azimi said Afghan security forces were strengthened enough last year and the process of improvement in their capacity would continue with the same zeal this year.

He said decline in security-related incidents in 2011 showed Afghan forces had improvd.

He said a huge number of key militant figure were killed or arrested last year. Ataullah Khpulwak
