KABUL Meteorological Authority (AMA) on Thursday forecasted continued snow and rainfall in most of the country this winter, hoping the ongoing drought sweeping northern parts would decrease.
The country is expected to receive an average of 270 millimeters of rain this year against the average annual rainfall of 230mm, the AMA head, Muhammad Ishaq Noori, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said there has been 15 to 20 percent decrease in rainfall last year, resulting in damages to crops in 14 provinces in the north, northeast and northwest this year.
However, snowfall has started falling in Kabul, Herat, Faryab, Ghor, Bamyan, Maidan Wardak, Sur-i-Pul, Jawzjan, Balkh, Takhar, Nuristan, Panjsher and Parwan provinces, with rains lashing other provinces over the past few days. The meteorological authority says the snowfall and rains would continue for several coming days.
“This season’s snowfall will result in storage of enough water for upcoming year,” Noori said.
According to Khan Muhammad Rashidi,www.pajhwok.comkhel village of Maidan Wardak province, the village received almost 50cm of rain in last two days.
“People are very happy and farmers optimistic of increased levels of yields next year,” he said.
