KANDAHAR: Two militants were killed on Sunday when the roadside bomb they were planting went off in the Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province, an official said.
The incident took place in the Musa village at around 3:30pm, the governor’s spokesman told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Zalmai Ayubi said the two had planted seven landmines and it was the eighth one that exploded prematurely. Their bodies were handed over to the villagers by security forces.
Elsewhere, a seven-member group of insurgents joined the peace process in eastern Laghman province, an intelligence official said. The men also turned in their arms, the source added.

KAPISA: A Taliban commander was killed during a clash with police in the Tagab district of central Kapisa province, officials said on Sunday.
The insurgent commander was killed during the encounter in the Tatarkhel area late on Saturday night, the district police chief told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The victim, known as Mubarez, led a group of more than 20 fighters against Afghan and foreign troops in the district, Haji Shah Agha said.
The police officer added the victim had served a local tribal force, which he quit after shooting two other commanders and joined the Taliban.
Resident Shukrullah confirmed the clash, saying the commander planned and executed attacks in the district. The Taliban also confirmed the commander’s death.

NIMROZ: Nearly 1,250 kilograms of drugs were seized by counter-narcotics police in the Khashrod district of southwestern Nimroz province on Sunday, an official said.
The caches seized from two vehicles included 1,150 kilograms of opium and 97 kilograms of heroin, the provincial police chief, Col. Mohammad Musa Rasuli, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Four occupants of the vehicles, who wanted to smuggle the illicit drugs to Iran, were detained, he said.
Resident Abdullah said: “Police recovered several packets from the two Corolla cars that were moving toward the Iranian border.”

PAKTIA: Three insurgents were killed and seven others arrested in a string of operations involving Afghan and international troops in southeastern Paktia and Paktika provinces over the past 24 hours, officials said on Sunday.
Three rebels were killed and as many, including a local commander, detained in Paktika, the governor’s house said. An ammunition cache was found in Yousafkhel district, a statement from the governor’s office said.
The cache consisted of artillery shells and a huge quantity of bullets and explosives, the statement added. Additionally, a combined force detained two fighters during a clash in the same district.
Meanwhile, the Afghan National Army 203rd Military Corps said three guerrillas were detained during an operation in the Samkani district of Paktia province, near the Pakistan border.
