QALA-I-NAW (PAN): During an unannounced visit to Afghanistan, the Spanish defence minister met soldiers and local officials in western Badghis province on Monday.
At his meeting with Governor Dilbar Arman, Pedro Morenés discussed the current security situation, reconstruction and reopening of link roads in insecure districts.
The provincial police chief, Col. Mohammad Jabbar Saleh, said Arman asked the Spanish minister to assist them with supplies to remote and insecure districts, Saleh said.
Spain has 1,500 soldiers under command of NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Badghis. Since 2001, 34 Spanish soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan.
