GARDEZ (PAN): The interior minister on Wednesday said the police force in southeastern Paktia province would be strengthened and equipped next year to ensure better security for development projects.

During a visit to the province, Bismillah Mohammadi met local officials, members of provincial council, tribal elders and police officials.

The council’s chief Khaista Jan Ahadi said most of development projects in the province had been stopped due to insecurity. He added strengthening security forces would help resume work on the projects, which would bridge the gulf between the government and the people.

His ministry preferred public welfare projects, Mohammadi said, identifying the increase in police strength as his top priority. He believed the task was important for development.

According to the interior ministry, security forces and government departments in the province have better coordination that has led to the arrest of militants before reaching their targets on several occasions.
