MAHMOOD RAQI/KABUL) said.

The suspected killer was apprehended, a brief statement from the alliance said, without giving the NATO-led troops’ nationalities or the exact location of the shooting.

But a local security source confided to Pajhwok Afghan News that four French soldiers were shot dead by their Afghan counterpart in the Tagab district of Kapisa province.

Without giving details, the official said that at least 15 other foreign troops were wounded in the shooting at a military base in the restive district this morning.

Col. Asadullah Hamidi, a spokesman for the Kapisa police headquarters, said they had received information regarding the incident in Tagab. They were yet to have a detailed report, he added.

A resident of the Paindakhel village, Mazar Gul, said the clash erupted when ANA soldiers were passing the ISAF base in the district. He had no information about the cause of the shooting.

Earlier in the month, an American soldier was killed when a man in an ANA uniform opened fire at a military centre in southern Afghanistan.

More than 50 foreign troops have been killed and as many wounded by their Afghan partners since 2005, according to data compiled by USA Today.

In December, two French soldiers were shot dead by a man in an Afghan army uniform during a mission in Kapisa. The Taliban asserted responsibility for that attack.

Of the 3,600 French soldiers under ISAF command in Afghanistan, 82 have been killed since the 2001 ouster of the Taliban regime.
