Reports about poisoning plot baseless: AzimiBy Muhammad Hassan Khetab Jan 22, 2012 - 15:15
KABUL CITY (PAN): The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Sunday scorned media reports that a number of soldiers had died as a result of poisoning at the Kabul Military Training Centre.
The soldiers were reportedly poisoned and evacuated to the Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan Military Hospital in Kabul. One report attributed to doctors said a dozen soldiers had died of poisoning.
However, Gen. Zahir Azimi said: "Unfortunately some media outlets have released wrong reports about the death of soldiers at the hospital." However, the MoD spokesman would not say how many troops had been poisoned,
The baseless reports had caused grave concerns to hundreds of families, Azimi said, asking media professionals to investigate the issue and speak with the training centre authorities.
He said medical investigations showed the poisoning was caused by careless washing of fruits and vegetables. While ruling out any poisoning plot, Azimi said all affected soldiers had returned to work after receiving in-time treatment.
