JALALABAD (PAN): The ongoing snowfall has forced the closure of the strategic Mahipar Pass on the Kabul-Jalalabad highway, affecting hundreds of passengers, officials said on Sunday.
Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the pass, because of snow slides on the busy road, a passenger from Jalalabad, Ikramullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Since vehicles plying the highway faced serious problems, the road had been closed for traffic, said the Kabul-Sarobi road commander, Halim Khan. In a bid to reopen the road as soon as possible, the highway is being sprayed with salt and sand.
Col. Shakur Khan, in charge of the Sarobi-Laghman road, advised drivers to use chained tyres while travelling on the slippery highway.
The snowfall had also created problems for residents of different parts of Kabul, said Deputy Minister of Public Works Ahmad Shah Wahid. He asked drivers to used chained tyres to avert traffic accidents.
