Weapons surrendered to DIAG in Ghazni, Kandahar

GHAZNI CITY (PAN): As many as 160 arms and ammunition were handed over to the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Group (DIAG) last year in southern Ghazni province, an official said on Tuesday.

The weapons were turned in by the National Directorate of Security (NDS), Lt. Col. Abdul Baqi, DIAG head for the province, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The Afghan National Army (ANA) and police had also collected some illegal weapons but they were yet to be transferred to DIAG, he added.

NDS Director Syed Amir Shah Sadat said the weapons, most of them in working condition, were recovered during operations against militants and illegal armed groups.

Also on Tuesday, 123 weapons were handed over to the group by the intelligence service in southern Kandahar province. The arms and ammunitions were recovered during operations over the past four months, Governor Tooryalai Wesa said.

He appreciated the spy service role in seizing a huge quantity of arms and said the province had become somewhat peaceful.

DIAG head for Kandahar, Brig. Gen. Abdul Qayyum Popal, said the weapons had been shifted to a regional depot of the Ministry of Defence. They repaired some of the arms and handed them to security forces, he said.
