JALALABAD (PAN): More than 2,000 Afghan families that recently returned to four districts in eastern Nangarhar province would receive free medical treatment, an official said on Wednesday.

Free medical camps were arranged on Wednesday in Ghanikhel, Naziyan, Achin and Spin Ghar districts to provide assistance to the families. The initiative has been funded by the Ghanikhel district chief, Zalmai, and some of his relatives.

Zalmai told Pajhwok Afghan News a team of doctors had been assigned with providing treatment and medicine to poor families in different areas of Spin Ghar and Achin districts, where elderly men and children suffered from various diseases due to cold weather.

Without revealing the amount of expanses, he said people would be provided treatment for one week. “I am paying for treatment of patients from my own pocket,” he said.

Residents of the districts were happy over the drive. Mohammad Jan, a tribal elder in Spin Ghar district, said most of children and elders suffered from diseases. He urged traders to come forward and play their role in facilitating the ongoing drive.

Meanwhile, the refugee and repatriate department provided food and other winter assistance to 376 returning families in Momandara district.

The items had been provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), an official said.

The department head Ghulam Haidar Faqirzai said each family received edibles and 14 other items.
