AIBAK (PAN on Wednesday received certificates on completion of a nine-month literacy course in northern Samangan province, an official said.
A joint venture of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the World department, literacy officer at the department, Firuzudin Ahmadi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The participants were aged between 14 to 45 years, he said, adding of the 2,200 women and 400 men, 2,400 people were able to complete the programme and received certificates.
Up to 130 similar opportunities had previously taken place with the financial assistance from the WFP and UNICEF, Ahmadi added.
Education director Abdul Aziz called the programme a long-term goal of his department, saying participants were also provided food during the courses.
He said almost 406 tonnes of food items, including wheat, oil, salt and pulses, had so far been distributed to participants of such programmes.
One of the beneficiaries, Mari Gul, 31, said:” Previously, I could not write and read books. The course enables me to read books and newspapers”.
Happy over the course, Gul called for the continuation of such programmes in the future. “Previously, I would ask my children to read me out books,” she said.
She received 200 kilograms of wheat, 24 kilograms of pulses, 15 kilograms of oil and two kilograms of salt from organisers of the course.
