“Concerning the opening of a Taliban office in Qatar, as Secretary Clinton said after she met the Qatari foreign minister earlier this month, nothing has been concluded on the opening of an office, and more work needs to be done,” the embassy said in a statement.
Quoting US Special Representative Marc Grossman, the embassy said, work that needed to be done included first, direct contact between Qatar and Afghanistan on the opening of any office and secondly, they also needed a clear statement from the Taliban against international terrorism in support of a peace process to end the armed conflict.”
Deputy Foreign Minister Javed Ludin told reporters in Kabul last week that the opening of a Taliban’s liaison office in Doha was yet to be set up and there was still a long way to go. He added the Qatari government should send a delegation to Kabul to discuss the issue.
Weeks ago, the Taliban confirmed they had agreed to have a political bureau in Qatar for peace talks with the Afghan government and the international fraternity.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said they had agreed to have an office outside Afghanistan to initiate a dialogue with the international community.
