High Peace Council member kidnapped
ASADABAD (PAN): Unidentified gunmen abducted on Sunday a member of the High Peace Council in the eastern province of Kunar, bordering Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region of Bajaur, officials said.
Maulvi Shafiullah Shafi and his friend were ordered down the vehicle they was travelling in between Asmar and Ghazniabad districts, lawmaker Maulvi Shahzada Shahid told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Also a member of the peace, Shahid said his colleague was visiting the province for peace negotiations with a Taliban group, which had decided to join the national reconciliation process.
Provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Ewaz Mohammad Naziri said the council member had not informed security personnel of his visit to the area. If police had been informed, they would have taken steps to ensure Shafi’s security, he added.
A resident of the Wanth Waigal district of neighbouring Nuristan province, Shafi previously worked as education director. No one has so far claimed responsibility for his abduction.
